Learning How to Stay Safe Around Water
Pupils at Blessed John Duckett Catholic Primary School recently welcomed the Fire Brigade to school for an important session on water safety.
With the recent hot weather, firefighters spoke to the children about the dangers of swimming in rivers and other unsafe bodies of water. They explained what to do if they, or one of their friends, ever got into difficulty in the water.
The visit provided valuable advice and practical safety information that could help keep children safe during the summer months.
Exploring the Fire Engine
After the session, pupils had the exciting opportunity to look around the fire engine, sit inside the vehicle and even hear the sirens.
The experience was a real highlight of the day and helped bring learning to life in a memorable and engaging way.

We had the Fire Brigade come into school this morning to teach us all about water safety. The firefighters explained how we can stay safe in water. They told us it is important to "float to live" if you get stuck in cold water. To do this, you should put your head back, keep your ears in the water, move your arms gently, starfish out and allow your legs to sink.
If we see anyone else in trouble in the water, it is important to call 999, ask for the Fire Brigade and give them your location. A great way to provide an exact location is to download the free What3Words app, which gives a precise location.
After the assembly, each class got to go outside and have a look around the fire engine. We all got to sit inside and we even got to sound the sirens!
