A Creative and Colourful Start to Our New Topic
This half‑term, the children at Blessed John Duckett Catholic Primary School, Tow Law have begun exploring their exciting new topic: Africa. Both Class 1 and Class 3 have enjoyed a busy few weeks filled with art, culture, stories and hands‑on learning.
African Art in Class 3
Class 3 have been studying a range of traditional African patterns, looking closely at colours, shapes and repeating designs. Using different art mediums, the children created their own bold, vibrant African‑inspired patterns. These will soon be combined to form a stunning African patterned collage, celebrating creativity and artistic expression across the class.
Exploring Handa’s Surprise
Class 1 started their Africa topic with the much‑loved story Handa’s Surprise. Through the story, the children learned about life in an African village, meeting new animals and discussing what everyday life looks like in different parts of the world. This story has created wonderful links to geography, storytelling and food exploration.
Learning About African Habitats
Both classes have spent time discovering a range of African habitats, including the savanna, desert and rainforest. The children talked about the animals that live there and the features that make each habitat unique.
Tasting Tropical Fruits
Inspired by Handa’s Surprise, the children also had the chance to try a selection of fruits featured in the story. They enjoyed preparing colourful fruit kebabs, tasting new flavours and learning more about where these fruits grow.
